Tips to boost your WiFi signal

Do you suffer from a weak WiFi signal or dead WiFi points in the house? You can boost the WiFi signal with some easy solutions. Some solutions are effective and free of charge. In this article we explain how you can do this.

Change the router's location
The router plays the most important role of the WiFi signal. This is because this is the transmitter of WiFi and location also plays an important role here. Do you not have a strong WiFi signal in the attic and is the router located somewhere in the meter cupboard? Try moving the router to a central location in the house. You will notice that the WiFi signal will be amplified in several places. The receivers (TV, smartphones, consoles) must ultimately be able to receive the signal properly. This is an effective and free solution.

Change WiFi channel
Another option is to change the frequency or channel. Some routers have the option to also transmit via the 5 GHz frequency. Via this frequency it is possible to transmit a much stronger WiFi signal. Some routers (simultanious dual band) can use both the 2.4 and 5 GHz frequency at the same time, which ensures a stronger WiFi signal.

In addition to the frequency, it is also possible to change the channel. Multiple devices with a wireless connection can use the same channel, so a channel can be busy. This causes a delay, making the WiFi signal weaker. Try out several WiFi channels via the router and you will notice which channel provides the fastest WiFi. You can easily check this with a free software from Windows called Netstumbler. This allows you to see which channel achieves which speed.

Other router with higher transmitting power
As mentioned before, the router is the most important link of the WiFi signal. Usually the 2.4 GHz routers are the cheapest but also the slowest transmitters. You can consider buying a new router with a dual band (2.4 + 5 GHz) or simultaneous dual band operation. A dual band router can use one of two frequencies with 5 GHz being the fastest. A simultaneous dual band uses both frequencies at the same time, which ensures the fastest WiFi. Please note that the receiving devices can also receive a strong WiFi signal. A balance must therefore be found between the receiver and the transmitter. For example, a router can broadcast a WiFi signal of 1000 Mb/s, but if a receiver can receive a maximum of 200 Mb/s, this will also be the maximum that the receiver will use.

Wifi amplifiers
You can amplify the WiFi signal with a WiFi amplifier (also called a repeater). This product ensures that the WiFi signal from the router is picked up and then retransmits it. It is important that the amplifier is placed in a place where the WiFi connection is just strong enough. Place it between the router and the place where the WiFi signal is very weak to get the optimal result. You will receive the best result if the WiFi receiver has the same WiFi speed as the router. As mentioned before, the speeds should be close to each other for the fastest WiFi.

You can strengthen the WiFi signal in several ways. We recommend that you first look at the free solutions. If this still doesn't help, you can always purchase a WiFi amplifier from Majstra for a reasonable price. This way you can have a strong WiFi connection anywhere in your home for tablets, media players and mini PCs.
