Equalizer or equalizer settings are a very overlooked feature of the iPhone. If you are not satisfied with the sound delivered by your built-in speakers or even through headphones or a third-party speaker, you can change it using the equalization settings.

There's no real way to have the perfect EQ settings because everyone's tastes are different, but you can use the Apple Music or Spotify settings to customize the sound to your liking. Presets adjust sound frequencies that affect properties like treble and bass, and optimize them for your listening preferences and environment. So yes, adjusting the equalizer can improve the sound coming out of your cheap or low-end speakers.

Apple doesn't let you adjust EQ settings for music playback the same way Spotify does, so you'll have to choose one of the presets. (Although on your desktop, you can also customize the equalizer for each individual iTunes song.) Presets are designed based on the genre of music best suited for that particular sound arrangement. The equalizer is off by default, but your choices are:

  • Acoustics
  • Bass Booster (makes booming bass sound more prominent)
  • Bass reduction (makes booming bass sound less prominent)
  • Classic
  • Dancing
  • Deep
  • Electronics
  • Flat (removes any iTunes preset in favor of flat frequencies)
  • Hip-hop
  • jazz
  • Late Night (turns down usually loud sounds and boosts quiet parts; great if you're at a distance)
  • Latin
  • Intensity
  • Living room
  • Piano
  • Pop
  • R&B
  • Oscillate
  • Small speakers
  • Spoken speech
  • Treble Booster (makes treble more prominent)
  • Treble Reducer (makes the treble less prominent)
  • Voice amplifier
Tip: Before deciding which one sounds most appealing to you, listen to one of your favorite songs – something you think is a big part of your music collection. Then, as the song plays, start cycling through the different EQ settings to get an idea of which one best complements the sound of the song.

Spotify offers all the same EQ presets as iOS settings, except for Late Night. (See above for those options and some explanation.) But unlike Apple's options, Spotify also includes a visual equalizer that you can drag to your heart's content.

A word about frequencies:all you really need to know about them is that the lower the frequency, the lower the sound controlled by the knob. For example, the 60Hz and 150Hz controls on the left will work mostly on bass, so sliding up will increase bass sounds and sliding down will decrease. On the other side, the 2.4KHz and 15KHz frequencies surround the treble, or treble.

If you are not happy with any of the presets but still want to activate the equalizer, I again recommend playing one of your favorite songs. While playing, start dragging the different frequencies up or down to see what you like best.
