3 useful tips to extend the battery life of your OnePlus 3

With a Snapdragon 820 processor, 6GB of RAM and 64GB of UFS 2.0 storage, no matter how battery efficient you claim your device is, a 3000mAh battery isn't enough to last a full day. The first few days I spent with the OnePlus 3, I had to charge my battery twice, mostly late at night the second time, so I could last all day before hitting the bag. I strongly believe there should have been a bigger battery to make this a near perfect flagship killer.

In all this, the only positive side was the Dash Charging technology which allows the OnePlus 3 to be charged from 0 to 100% in less than an hour. But I'm not a fan of plugging in my phone and living with the idea that prevention is better than cure. Here are some things that I think can help you save OnePlus 3 battery juice and make it last all day.

Note: These points are not laboratory tested under various conditions and are experimental work. Therefore, final results may vary.

1. Use dark mode to save battery

OnePlus 3 sports an HD Optical AMOLED display, which in itself is a great battery saver compared to regular LCD screens. However, there are a few things you can change in the Android settings menu to optimize battery life. Oxygen OS hosts an inbuilt feature using which you can get a system-wide black theme.

Settings can be found under Personalization in the settings menu and to match the sleek dark mode, you can also change the accent colors. Due to the science behind an AMOLED screen, only the non-black portion of the screen will light up and extend battery life throughout the day. Most third-party apps these days have a dark mode/theme, which you can enable to save battery.

2. Disable proximity gestures and wakeup

The Oxygen operating system gives the ability to draw a gesture on the screen to wake up the device and even launch the camera app very quickly. However, for this, the device must have a service running in the background causing a wakelock which drains the battery. So if you don't use gestures frequently or think you can live without them, I suggest turning them off.

The option can be found in the Gestures option in OnePlus 3 settings. Just tap the Disabled at the top right and all options will be disabled. You can also disable Proximity wakeup functionality in the Display settings that wake the device when a hand is waved over the proximity sensor to preview notifications. This feature also keeps your proximity awake all the time and therefore turning it off will indeed save battery life.

3. Use Invert Colors mode wherever needed

In the first point, I highlighted the ability to use dark mode in the app whenever needed. However, not all apps support this feature and you can still find many reading apps and browsers with a white background. In situations like these, you can pull down the notification drawer and tap the Invert Color settings tiles option.

This will invert the colors and make the back white and vice versa and the rest of the work will be done by the optical AMOLED display. Once you are done, you can disable the option and return the display to normal.
