TikTok's Verge Guide

Despite facing various controversies over its content and ownership, TikTok persists as a popular video app – and no wonder. It lets you quickly create videos, add a variety of effects, text captions and audio backgrounds, and show the world what you think is cute, funny, politically problematic, deadly serious or to correct. TikTok is full of cute animals, weird dances, sarcastic remarks and imaginative dialogues between the same individual dressed in two different ways.

In fact, it's hard to say who's having more fun:those browsing through the wide variety of videos available, finding out what others are doing, dancing and chatting, or those creating these videos imaginative and enjoy the attention and feedback they elicit. (Or not to enjoy it, according to these comments – it is social media, after all, and so there are a lot of angry people.)

If you want to know what it's all about and want to try the app, either as a watcher or as a creator, we've got you covered. In I/O Means Guide to TikTok, we have step-by-step instructions for new users and great tips for seasoned creators. We explain how to find what interests you, how to refuse what you don't, and how to manage the algorithms that determine what you see next.

We hope you find them useful in your explorations of the wonderful world of TikTok.
